Chapter 10

“Bizzy?” Jasper staggers my way, wide-eyed with worry and perhaps a little bit of fear.

“Did you order two sofas to the tune of eight thousand dollars?”

Fish yodels out a laugh while tucked in the questionable safety of my arms. I don’t care what you spent on those sofas. That look on his face is priceless.

It’s just after six, the sky is that special shade of deep purple right after a splendid sunset, and my marriage is suddenly in the balance.

The masses have gathered outside of Georgie’s cottage, along with Jasper, Leo, Emmie, and me. Most of the people here are Georgie’s potential suitors, older gentlemen with determined looks in their eyes. It’s a little unnerving. I’m glad both Leo and Jasper are here because a spate of random arrests seems imminent—as does the revoking of my credit card, and I’ll be the one to revoke it.

Georgie had Jordy set out twinkle lights in the weeping willows that line the pathway to her cottage, and there are buckets of beer and platters of Emmie’s Pastel Pretties set out on a table nearby. The atmosphere is festive, a warm breeze pushes through the willow trees lining the area, and the dogs run wild, having the time of their lives.

Georgie pops up next to me before I can answer my zombified husband.

“You got two sofas for eight grand?” Georgie winks my way as she feigns disbelief. “That’s the bargain of the century. Not only is one of those Millennial Mischief loveseats—emphasis on the love—hard to come by, but they cost an arm and a leg.” She shoots Jasper with her fingers. “Thank your lucky stars, Detective. You got away with losing an eyetooth and an ear.” She leans toward Emmie and me. “Stick around, girls. Word on the street is, after some of these men imbibe a little paint thinner, they turn into the zucchini sling brigade.”

“There’s something to look forward to,” I say as she takes off. “Hey, wait! How did Vienna get my credit card information?”

“You shouldn’t leave your purse under your desk, behind a stack of trashy romance novels with a sweater on top of it where just anyone could find it,” she shouts right back.

I scoff in her wake before turning to look at my poor husband. “They are not trashy romance novels. They’re spicy treats that help stir my imagination.”

Both Leo and Emmie laugh, but oddly enough, Jasper doesn’t even raise a brow.

“Were we in the market for a deal on sofas?” He pulls me in and lands a kiss to my lips, and thankfully, I can feel the glacier thawing between us.

My shoulders hike with a noncommittal shrug. “They’re modular sofas that not only have a strong cult following, but they have a hint of all things naughty.”

His head ticks back a notch. “And you only got two?”

Leo gives him a mock sock on the arm. “I knew you’d come around.”

“I’m glad you feel that way.” Emmie wraps her arms around his waist. “Because we’ve got one on the way ourselves.
